Key points:
- Fresh graduates, young professionals, and ambitious interns should be considered when hiring, especially now
- Their predisposition towards lower-level jobs ensures that their salaries are more economic
- Students and graduates are dominating the online internship scene which helps develop their skills early on
- This tech-savvy and ambitious bunch hold a high potential to be key people in companies looking for fresh perspectives and a digital-first nature
- Those are two critical traits that organizations need to adopt as they navigate the new normal
It’s undeniable — things look pretty bad and only seem to be getting worse. Layoffs are happening left and right and businesses are at a standstill. Both employment hopefuls and employers are running out of options. Following an unknown length of time where most are stuck at home, threats of economic recession loom, and with a Great Depression among most projections, the hiring process just became much more streamlined: hire the best.
For organizations that have decided to continue their search, there’s no better time to consider the latest entry to the workforce: fresh graduates, young professionals, and ambitious interns.
"This predisposition towards lower-level jobs also ensures that their salaries are more economic"
Where once the youth were frowned upon and seen as unreliable by corporations, they may very well be the solution to rebuilding the economy. Students and fresh graduates are a different breed of worker altogether. While their lack of experience puts them in lower positions, they can be coached and managed by the higher-ups already in the company. This predisposition towards lower-level jobs also ensures that their salaries are more economic than a full-time, or more experienced employee, reducing spending on salary.
What they lack in experience they make up for in new perspectives untainted by old beliefs; they are much more liberal and open minded. This open nature does not only apply to their beliefs but to their ideas and technological skill as well. Younger generations are simply more adept at using modern tools to solve problems. Moreover, compared to the previous generation of workers, they are much more specialized towards their chosen fields.
The best part about this? There’s more of them than there ever has been. Statistics show that in 2016, 40% of all workers aged 25 to 29 had a bachelor’s degree.
"Their experience working online gives them an edge over others who do not"
These students or graduates are the same workers now dominating the online internship scene. Online internship programs are usually held over vacations or in between semesters but can also be held all year. Offering productive students an outlet to pour their work into rather than summertime complacency, these employment options tend to be populated by the aforementioned demographic.
Now, young adults working online in the time of pandemic should be given more than a second glance. These part-time online workers are not only managing their studies but also balancing their education with an online workload. Their experience working online gives them an edge over others who do not because even before entering the full-time career market, they already develop the skills necessary to function and advance in a field full of experienced adults.
"Fresh perspectives and a digital-first nature"
There are mediums like Recruitday that can help companies connect with these talented individuals by offering students an easy way to apply for companies that they align themselves with. With such a diverse market, it should be no problem for students to research workplaces that they can help grow.
This tech-savvy and ambitious bunch hold a high potential to be the next key people in companies looking for fresh perspectives and a digital-first nature, two critical traits that organizations need to adopt as they navigate the new normal.
